At the November 2, 2011 Mohegan District Roundtable, I presented a Life to Eagle program for the Boy Scout Leaders. The presentation described a new publication, Guide to Advancement, as well as a new 2011 printing of the Eagle Scout Application and a 2012 version of the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook. These publications and more are available from the BSA website at www.scouting.org/scoutsource/BoyScouts/AdvancementandAwards/resources.aspx.

Any Scout who is submitting an Eagle Application after November 15, 2011 should download and use the new Eagle Application. This is a PDF fillable form, which means that by using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, the Scout can complete the form on his computer and print it out. He can also print the blank form and fill it out by hand (legibly, in ink) or by using a computer to position the data on the form and then print it out. The Eagle Application should be printed in color, but does not have to be printed on both sides of a page -- two pages are acceptable.

Any Scout who has started completing his project plan, or who has had his plan approved should continue with the old Workbook, as long as he completes his project within the first six months of 2012. Any Scout starting to plan a project now should use the new Workbook.

Note that the new Workbook is very different, with a lot more detailed sections to fill out and questions to be answered. Most Scouts will greatly benefit from the advice and guidance of an adult Eagle Adviser who is familiar with the process of planning an Eagle project. Those Advisers must pay careful attention to the new Workbook, and the steps outlined there.

You can also download a PDF file of the complete PowerPoint presentation that I gave at the Roundtable.
Starting in December, 2009, there is a new merit badge that our Scouts will be interested in learning about. SCUBA is the first new merit badge in 3 years. SCUBA certification must be taught by an instructor registered with and certified by one of the BSA recognized organizations, such as the professional association of diving instructors (PADI). My understanding at this point is that a SCUBA merit badge counselor does not have to be a certified instructor, but must be able to work with the Scouts to meet the requirements and have the Scouts taught by a registered instructor to obtain their deep water dive certification.

Several other new merit badges will be introduced throughout 2010:

Inventing (First quarter 2010)

Geocaching (Second quarter 2010)

Scouting Heritage (Second quarter 2010)

Robotics (Fourth quarter 2010)

This is really something to look forward to. You can find more information at the BSA Web site.
